School students offered suggestions for improvement in traffic and transportation, environment and sports facilities, at a contest for school students on the theme ‘Smart Ideas for a Better Coimbatore’, organised by KURAL as part of the ongoing Coimbatore Vizha, on Wednesday.
An idea for improving the environment, a team suggested, was adopting waterways inside the city with cleaning of Sanganur Canal being an initial step.
The students suggested that water hyacinth in lakes could be harvested to produce manure for agriculture and mushroom cultivation.
The use of waterways would reduce the number of vehicles using roads.
In traffic and transportation, students suggested various measures such as stringent punishment for violation of traffic rules including confiscating the mobiles used while driving and blocking the SIM card of the mobile phones used.
N. Krishnakumar, Chairman of KURAL, said that the objective of the contest was to sensitise the younger generation to the problems of the city and make them ponder over how they could effectively contribute to its betterment.
A total of eight teams from various schools participated by making a power point presentation for about eight minutes.
Archana Dange and Rajesh Govindarajulu were the judges for the event.
The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (R.S.Puram ) team comprising S. Manoj Prabaakar, K. Sriranganathan, R. Aswanth of Plus One walked away with the first prize while Abhinav Sankar, Rithuvarshan and Balaji, Standard IX students of BVM Global bagged the second prize. Kumaresh.R, Saiguhan. E, Raghunandhanan of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Ajjanur) of Plus One, won the third prize.
