School bands battle it out

Heavy drum beats, bugle calls and rhythmic footsteps filled the air as marching bands from over 20 schools put forth their best at the inter-school band competition held at Shree Baldevdas KikanI Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School on Sunday.

The competition was organised by Rotary Club of Coimbatore and Coimbatore District Sports and Games Welfare Association. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Coimbatore City, Manoharan, was the chief guest for the event.

As many as 1,110 students from 23 schools across Coimbatore and Tirupur participated.

According to the organisers, synchronised movement of the band members, full uniform, use of musical instruments and performance within the given time were the factors that decided the winners.

Teacher and band in-charge of Amrita Vidyala, Nallampalayam, K. Gandhimathi said that the two 40-member teams from the school had come prepared for a seven-minute performance including welcome note, musical display, formation display and V.I.P salute.

President of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore K.S. Balakrishnan, Secretary Gurpreet Singh, President of Coimbatore District Sports and Games Welfare Association S. Ramachandran, and Vice-President R.S. Narendran were present.

Categories

The competition was conducted in five categories. The winners are Infants: St. Leo’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Amrita Vidyalaya MHSS, Nallampalayam, S.N.K.V. Matriculation School, Amrita Vidyala M.H.S.S., Ettimadai and Amrita Vidyala M.H.S.S, Tirupur.; Boys: S.R.K. Vidyalaya, Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, and Ashram M.H.S.S, Udumalpet, Girls: Avila Convent M.H.S.S., Bishop Francis MHSS, and St. Joseph’s MHSS; Mixed: St. Joseph’s M.H.S.S., Suguna PIP School, G.D. MHSS, S.B.K.V. Matriculation School and Amrita Vidyalaya; Rural: Amrita Vidyalaya M.H.S.S, Ettimadai, Amrita Vidyalaya M.H.S.S., Tirupur and Sri Kumaran M.H.S.S.

Outstanding performance prize was awarded to Shri Saraswati Vidya Mandir School.
