Sand prices will drop this week, says Minister

June 20, 2011 12:46 am | Updated 12:46 am IST - ERODE:

The State government has initiated measures to bring down the prices of sand. The prices are expected to drop within this week, Public Works Minister K.V. Ramalingam said.

The government has taken steps to open 65 new quarries and ensure adequate supply of sand to the people at nominal rates, he told media persons after releasing water into the Kalingarayan canal for irrigation near here on Sunday. The Minister further said that the government would initiate efforts to remove encroachments on the assets belonging to the public works department.

To a question, the Minister alleged that the previous DMK Government had constructed the new secretariat complex primarily for the benefit of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's family. An inquiry has already been ordered, he pointed out.
