Coimbatore Corporation has slapped a fine of Rs. 1.50 lakh on a contractor executing the underground drainage work. G. Latha, Commissioner, said that during an inspection on North Thayir Itteri Road in Ward 44 a couple of weeks ago, she found that the contractor had not closed the road properly after completing the underground drainage pipe laying work. The poor execution had led to earth caving in and lorries getting stuck. After asking the contractor, SEW Infrastructure Limited, Hyderabad, to undertake the work, she has imposed the fine.

According to sources, this was for the first time that the Corporation had imposed such a heavy fine on a contractor. On several occasions the civic body had slapped fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000 for delayed or poor execution of work.
