Rs. 1.34 crore unaccounted money seized at Gandhipuram

An election flying squad of Coimbatore South Assembly Segment have seized Rs. 1.34 crore unaccounted money from two bus commuters in the early hours of Thursday.

The cash was handed over to the Income Tax Department officials as the persons carrying it did not have appropriate documents.Assistant Returning Officer of the assembly segment T.R. Ravi said that two persons I. Dowlath (30) from Kannur district in Kerala and A. Ashraf (42) from Bengaluru alighted from a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Gandhipuram Bus Stand around 4.30 a.m. The bus was proceeding to Kerala from Bengaluru.

During inquiry, the two men claimed that they worked for Yusuf, a gold jewellery wholesaler in Kerala, and were returning with the money they got by selling his jewellery. The officials also got another statement that they carried the money for a real estate transaction.

“It will be returned to the rightful owners when they produced supportive documents. A fine will be imposed on them if it is unaccounted money,” an official said.

Rs. 3.27 lakh seized

The officials seized Rs. 3.27 lakh from two persons in separate incidents on Thursday. It was returned after the persons carrying it produced supportive documents. In the first incident, a team had seized Rs. 77,800 from a textile trader at Sultanpet near Sulur
