City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Friday launched a 25-day-long road-safety campaign by Lead India 2020 Foundation and Vodafone cellular service providers. The campaign commenced at the Anna Statue Junction on Avanashi Road.

Mr. Viswanathan launched the drive in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) T. Senthilkumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Ramakrishnan, Secretary of Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore R. Raveendran, Zonal Business Head of Vodafone Alex John and Tamil Nadu State Co-ordinator for Lead India 2020 J. Sathish Kumar. The road safety campaign initiative will focus on urging motorists to wear seat belts while driving, making helmets must for two-wheeler riders as well as pillion riders, avoiding drunk driving, stop using cellular phones while on wheels and avoiding over speeding.

The focus will be on rewarding motorists found complying with the road rule so that other motorists could be motivated.

The campaign would also include distribution of handbills, pamphlets sensitising the motorists to healthy driving/riding practices especially with regard to the Green Corridor Project launched on Avanashi Road.

Volunteers of Lead India 2020 will distribute over 10,000 pamphlets to motorists at all the signals on all the 25 days. On the last day, there would be a walkathon roping in the students from institutions across the city, where they will be administered a pledge on complying with road rules.
