Residents of Balaji Gardens, Subbammal Layout, Indra Nagar, Giri Nagar and a few other residential colonies in Ward 8 of the Coimbatore Corporation want the Coimbatore Corporation to repair the drain in the ward.
The drain that runs along the colonies was damaged, choked at many places, too narrow to take water or was non existent at many stretches. And when it rained, the water flows onto the road, making life miserable for pedestrians like him, said K. Gandhirajan, a resident of Giri Nagar.
There had been instances of people falling into the drain when the road was flooded. That was one of the issues. The next was odour, which was unbearable.
A little away from his house in Krishnasamy Konar Thottam, the drainage is in very bad shape. At a few stretches, the waste has filled the drain. And at a few other stretches, it is damaged.
R. Thangamani, also a resident of the area, said that the drains had been in the condition for the past eight months or so. The condition of the roads there turned worse when the Corporation undertook the underground drainage work.
The civic body should repair the roads and also the drain, he said. Asked about the bad drain, the area Councillor K. Marimuthu said that he had taken up with the Mayor S.M. Velusamy the issue of bad drains in the area. The residents’ grievance was genuine and it ought to be attended to at the earliest.
The Mayor had promised him that the drain in the area would be constructed afresh with funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme.
