Residents hoist black flags atop houses

Black flags were raised atop about 750 houses on the banks of Muttanakulam lake here on Friday, protesting against the decision of the Corporation to demolish all the houses and shift them to another place.

The residents claimed that they were staying in these houses for the last two decades and the decision of the Corporation either to shift or demolish their houses, citing a Supreme Court order to vacate the dwellings to clean up the lake, police said.

The corporation sources said there was no going back on the issue, which involved the Court order. Further, the Corporation had already written to the Government about the action to be taken and sought alternate land for construction of apartments for those getting dislocated.
