Hundreds of residents from Corporation Wards No: 41 and 42 who face displacement from their hamlets owing to the eviction drive planned in the area, observed fast here on Tuesday, along with Communist Party of India members.
According to them, they resorted to agitation as there was no response from the officials concerned to their repeated representations requesting the district administration to drop the eviction drive planned in the area.
The agitators pointed out that a few hundred families in Poolavarisukumaran Nagar and Satya Colony were served notices by the Public Works Department (Water Resources Organisation) on May 26 asking to them to vacate the area within 21 days stating that the dwellings were situated close to River Noyyal and built over water sources. “But this is unethical considering that the people have been residing in the same spots for last three decades and moreover, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board had issued temporary patta to them in 1988 itself,” CPI district secretary M. Ravi said.
