The 66th Republic Day celebration in Coimbatore began with the hoisting of the National Flag by District Collector Archana Patnaik at the VOC Park Ground. Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan; Inspector General of Police (West Zone) K. Shankar; and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore Range) Ayush Mani Tiwari; were present.
She honoured five freedom fighters.
Ms. Patnaik gave away the Chief Minister’s Medal for meritorious service to 88 police personnel.
Close to 1,000 school and college students entertained the guests and visitors through various cultural programmes.
The highlight of the events was a dance by 70 students of Sathya Ammaiyar Memorial Government orphanage for Children.
Girls and boys of the Government High School at Rasipalayam displayed their skills in Silambam.
The Collector also distributed financial assistance and other benefits to more than 200 people. This included Rs. 95.75 lakh education loan to 30 students.
Thirty-nine people got free house sites. Certificates of appreciation were given to 13 employees of E.S.I. hospital, and 14 employees of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Various cultural programmes followed.
Coimbatore Mayor P. Rajkumar unfurled the National Flag at the corporation office in Town Hall. Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan; Deputy Commissioner P. Gandhimathi; Deputy Mayor Leelavathi Unni; officials and Councillors were present.
Corporation school students participated in the cultural programmes. SRP Ammani Ammal presented the welcome dance.
The girls of the Oppanakara Street school showcased their skills in yoga asanas.
Students of Standards III, and IV, who have been learning Bharatnatyam for over six months now, danced in front of the gathering, exhibiting their talents. And, so did the boys, who have been learning martial arts.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor K. Ramasamy hoisted the National Flag at the university.
At Bharathiar University, Vice-Chancellor G. James Pitchai hoisted the Tricolour.
The students then treated the gathering to cultural patriotism, the theme of which was patriotism.
Superintendent of the Coimbatore Central Prison K. Anandan hoisted the National Flag at the celebration organised at the prison.
Former convicts Krishnan, Muralidharan, and Muruganandham shared their experiences in the prison.
Prison guard Kumaravel entertained inmates with a karakattam, followed by dance by children of Saranalaya Home for the Prisoners’ Children.
The music troop of prison inmates played light music.
Prizes were given away to inmates who won the elocution competition organised as part of the celebration.
Kovai Attitude Trust gave away financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 to children of two prison inmates.
Residents of Sree Daksha’s Utkarsh Apartments at Vadavalli organised a cleaning programme (as part of the Clean India campaign), planting of saplings.
Tirupur
Republic day celebrations organised by the district administration at Chikkanna Government Arts College grounds here on Monday was marked with traditional splendour.
Collector G. Govindaraj unfurled the National Flag. Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Singh was present.
Mr. Govindaraj then distributed welfare assistance to 347 people. Certificates of appreciation were given to officials who performed well in their duties during the last one year.
Programmes came to a close with a colourful display of dances by school students.
Inspector General of Police S. N. Seshasai, Sub-Collector Senthilraj, Deputy Commissioners of Police P. Sundaravadivel and R. Thirunavukkarasu among others were present.
The celebrations in Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, included ceremonial parades and distribution of commendation certificates to cadets and teachers of the school.
Group Captain T.N. Sridhar of Indian Air Force, who is the principal of the school, was present.
Tirupur Mayor Visalakshi Appukkuty unfurled the National Flag at a function organised by the Tirupur Corporation.
Ms. Appukutty gave away welfare assistance, and appointment orders to five persons on compassionate grounds.
Udhagamandalam
At the Breeks Open Air stadium here The Nilgiris District Collector P. Sankar unfurled the Tricolour. Superintendent of Police T. Senthil Kumar was present. Mr. Sankar distributed welfare assistance to 108 people.
He honoured J. Halli Gowder, a freedom fighter of Nanjanad. He decorated 15 head constables with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s medals.
Certificates of appreciation were distributed to officials and help extended to a few differently abled persons.
