The residents of Bhadra Kaliamman Pudur in Kuniamuthur are a worried lot. They say that the construction of a compound wall by a private college in the area threatens to block the flow of a natural drain, which also carries the waste water.
K.V. Zacharias, a resident of Sharada Nagar Extension, says that if the private college were to construct the compound wall, the natural drain will get disconnected and the flow of water stopped. This will lead to stagnation of water in the area.
A. Chandran, another resident of the area, says that the stagnation of sewage in the past two days on account of the start of the work by the college management, has served as an indication of the things to come.
Things will be worse if the sewage were to remain stagnant there for days together, he fears.
Mr. Zacharias says that the natural drain carries sewage from Sharada Nagar, Sharada Nagar Extension, Shanti Nagar, Tehndral Nagar, and flows through the area to E.B. Colony and reaches Palakkad Road. The drain has been carrying the sewage for more than 15 years, ever since they moved into the area.
Before reaching E.B. Colony, the drain flows through an agriculture land, which the college management has recently bought, and is trying to fence. To protest against the college management’s move, the residents gathered in the area, informed R. Shanthamani, Councillor (Ward 92) and also the police.
Ms. Shanthamani says that she has requested the college management to stop construction at the contentious spot and has asked the Corporation officials to look into the issue. She has also spoken to the Village Administrative Officer of the area asking for details regarding the natural drain.
If it were to be established that Revenue Department records mention the drain, then she will ask the College management to not obstruct the drain.
