The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has urged the district administration to remove the encroachments on the Perumpallam irrigation canal.

A resolution was adopted to this effect at a meeting of the association held here recently. Association members said that a large number of farmers depend on the channel for taking up cultivation.

A few persons had encroached the channel bed, affecting the free-flow of water. The administration should take immediate steps to remove all the encroachments.

Efforts should also be made to carry out repairs to the shutters in the channel before releasing water from the Perumpallam anaicut, members said.

The association also appealed to the district administration to remove encroachments in all the channels of Lower Bhavani Project and ensure adequate supply of water to the farmers in the tail-end areas.

In another resolution, the association wanted the Erode District Co-operative Milk Producers Union (Aavin) to increase the price of toned milk by 50 paise per litre.

The price of the milk sold in other districts was higher when compared to the rates fixed by the Erode Aavin. This had caused huge revenue loss to the union, which had indirectly affected the milk producers, the association pointed out.

Association members also passed a resolution urging the administration to implement the 80-foot road project in Erode town.
