Residents of Harijan Colony in Varadhaiyangerpalayam, near Vaiyampalayam, on Monday petitioned the district administration seeking removal of encroachments near a well. The residents said that they had been living there for more than half a century and was using the well sunk for the benefit of the Scheduled Castes.

Though the well went dry about 20 years ago, the residents did not close the well. They continued to maintain it and used water whenever available.

A few caste Hindus, and influential persons had encroached upon the land near the well. They have constructed shops and houses. They have dumped plastics and solid wastes into the well so as to close it at the earliest.

The residents wanted the district administration to intervene. They said public toilets should be constructed besides providing other facilities.

Action needed

Residents of Thennampalayam in Arasur on Monday petitioned the district administration seeking action against a gang that entered Arasuran Engineering Works, a factory, on Tuesday last and created a ruckus there. After they left the place, the police locked the gate and left without offering any explanation. Though the police officers were well aware of the identity of the members of the gang that created trouble at the factory, they had failed to take any action. To restore law and order and render justice, the district administration should ask the police to initiate action against the guilty.

Provide patta

Residents of Uchinampalayam in Ward 18 of Sirumugai Town Panchayat on Monday petitioned the district administration seeking patta. They sought action against a group of persons who they said were trying to encroach upon the land they had used to build huts. The encroachers had threatened the residents.

Residents of Pathuvampalli, near Sulur, too have petitioned the District Collector seeking patta.
