Fire Service personnel honour colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty

Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services on Sunday observed Fire Service Day by honouring those who had laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Deputy Director (Fire and Rescue Service) M. Shahul Hameed placed a wreath before the memorial at the Fire Station Office (South) here. Further, the Fire Service Week is also observed from April 14 to 20 across the country.

Mr. Shahul Hameed read out the names of 27 servicemen who had lost their lives while performing their duty in Tamil Nadu between 1955 and 2013.

According to sources, the officials had also begun fire prevention efforts as such incidents increase during summer.

A demonstration was held recently at Oppanakara Street.

The Fire Service Day was observed in memory of 66 firemen who laid down their lives while tackling the fire from an explosion on 14th April 1944 at Mumbai in a ship called ‘SS Port Stikins.’

In all 231 personnel belonging to the various departments including 66 belonging to the Bombay Fire Brigade, were killed or missing.
