The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has asked the district administration to take steps to relocate the dump yard at Vellalore.
A delegation led by its district secretary S. Mohamed Rafi handed over a petition along with pictures of garbage at the yard to District Collector M. Karunagaran during the grievances redress meeting held at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday.
Mr. Rafi said that a joint committee comprising representatives from the district administration, Coimbatore Corporation, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Health Department, and residents of Vellalore, must be constituted immediately to address health-related problems in areas near the dump yard.
Residents living in the area have reported increasing cases of respiratory problems, skin rashes, irritation in the eyes, pollution of the groundwater, and mosquito menace.
The petition said that many schools were located near the dump yard besides several residential quarters, including that housing Rapid Action Force personnel. The yard must be relocated to a place where population is minimal.
Burial grounds
The Indu Makkal Katchi (Tamil Nadu) has asked the district administration to protect the burial grounds used by the majority community in the city.
In a petition submitted during the meeting, the party State secretary T.C. Senthil Kumar said that burial ground located at Perur Padithurai, where people performed annual rituals, was being used as dumping grounds now.
He asked the district administration to take steps to release water from the Chithirai Chavadi Anaicut for replenishing Noyyal for the ‘Aadi Peruku’ (August 3) and ‘Aadi Amavasai’ (August 6).
Liquor outlet
Residents of 100 Feet Road’s Third Cross Street in Gandhipuram asked the district administration to prevent the setting up of a liquor outlet in the area.
In a petition, S. Saravanan, one of the residents, said that many young women passed through the street where a call centre was located.
