Project Sastra, a joint initiative of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Saicity and Ganga Spine Rehabilitation Centre, will aim to rehabilitate 100 patients with spinal cord problems in two years by offering treatment under subsidised rate with physiotherapy and necessary orthotics care.

S. Rajasekaran, chairman of the department of orthopaedics and spine surgery at the hospital, said that Project Sastra, which was inaugurated by Police Commissioner K. Periaiah on Saturday, will focus on rehabilitating the spinal cord injured persons by giving them vocational training and to help them become an earning member for their family.

At the end of the treatment and completion of the vocational training, the patient will be given a certificate, some basic materials for his vocation, wheel chair/caliper and exercise equipment by the Club according to their need.

According to Dr. Rajasekaran, 56 patients have been rehabilitated so far with vocational training and their families at a cost of ₹34 lakh with contributions from Rotarians, philanthropists and grants from Rotary International. The cost that Rotary club will cover for the project is around ₹1 lakh per patient for the entire programme with equal amount of subsidy by Ganga Hospital.

A global grant of ₹30 lakh has also been received from Rotary International so that Rotary Saicity will be able to support 40 more patients, he said.
