Unidentified persons gained entry into the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Irugur and decamped with nine tonnes of red sanders. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had handed over the red sanders consignment to the ICD management after it seized the wood in Dharapuram in January this year. The value of the stolen red sanders is around Rs. 4 crore.
Sources said that though the DRI had seized the red sanders, it was for the ICD management to prefer the complaint with the Singanallur Police as the wood was in its custody.
Singanallur Police said that they were yet to receive a formal complaint.
The sources also said that the DRI would review how it stored the seized valuables, though this was the first time such an incident had happened in Coimbatore.
Meanwhile, the Container Corporation of India (Concor) is likely to review the security at ICD. An official of Concor told The Hindu that this was a rare incident and had not happened in the usual security area. Investigations were on and after consultations with all the stakeholders, it would review the security provided at the ICD. “It was DRI cargo that was kept in a container. We will now review and strengthen the security,” the official said. The ICD has a warehouse too.
