The Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has forecast the price of red chilli to be around Rs. 5,500 a quintal in February-March 2014. Normal production in the current season and good domestic and export demand is expected to keep the price above the predicted range. Based on this, farmers are asked to take their sowing / planting decision for chilli.

According to a release, the forecast was made based on the red chilli price that prevailed in Virudhunagar Regulated Market for the last 16 years. At present, cold stored samba chilli is trading around Rs. 6,500 to Rs. 7,000 a quintal in Virudhunagar Market.

In Tamil Nadu, chillies are raised in nurseries or directly sown in October-November, and harvested during February-March.
