‘Rathinavani 90.8’, a Community Radio Station of the Rathinam Group of Educational Institutions was launched by District Collector M. Karunagaran here on Friday.

Speaking at the event, the Collector highlighted the importance of radio as a means to reach the youth. “Though the media world is dominated by the visual media, radio has a significant role in disseminating educational and social developmental contents to the community. Today, FM radio can be heard using mobile phones and other gadgets that are accessible to the youth,” he said.

He urged that ‘Rathinavani 90.8’ should be committed to students and focus on communal harmony, national integration, skill development and entrepreneurial ideas.

The radio station was established under the Social Development Initiative of the institutions to broadcast programmes on education, environment, health, art and culture, entrepreneurship and infotainment.

The programmes would target students and the workers of the SIDCO industrial estate near the college campus, besides others.

The Department of Visual Communication would be involved in developing the content.

Students of the department would also get hands-on experience in handling the activities of the station. Madan A. Sendhil, Chairman, R. Manickam, Chief Executive Officer, K. Arumugam, Correspondent, and T.C. Mini, Principal, were present besides others.
