All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has nominated Coimbatore Corporation’s North Zone Chairman and the head of its Coimbatore Urban District unit P. Rajkumar to contest the election for Coimbatore Mayorship.

His nomination comes soon after the party appointed him as the secretary of the party’s urban district unit.

Mr. Rajkumar replaced former Mayor S.M. Velusamy as the Urban District Secretary and if he wins the mayoral election, the replacement will be complete.

And, his chances of winning the election appear bright as the principal Opposition party, the DMK, has said it will not contest the by-election.

A three-time Coimbatore Corporation Councillor from Ganapathy, Mr. Rajkumar had also twice held the North Zone Chairman’s post. During the last Council (2006-11), he was the leader of the AIADMK, which was in the Opposition.

He first became the Chairman of the North Zone when he made his debut in the Council in 2001.

Mr. Rajkumar holds a post graduate degree in Mass Communication and L.L.B.
