The recent rain brought relief to the residents as the temperatures came down, water level rose and the city’s tanks saw some water. But the city’s roads were battered - those that saw the execution of underground drainage works and also the other roads.

The bitumen-topped surfaces came off at several places and in others the rain left huge pot holes. From Vadavalli to Singanallur and from Thudiyalur to Kuniamuthur, the road surface came creating pot holes, big and small.

In several places, residents dumped earth, debris and also placed sticks to caution road users of the impending potholes as they did in Ramnagar. In places where the roads had sunk due to the execution of underground drainage works, the residents had cut and placed branches of trees.

N. Karthik, MLA, said the condition of most of the roads in the Central and East zones of the Corporation had deteriorated with the rain as those were the places that saw the completion of underground drainage works.

The Corporation should repair the damaged roads - patch the damaged stretch at the earliest as they pose threat to the safety of motorists.

K. Kathirmathiyon, consumer activist, said that by not filling potholes, the Corporation was abdicating its responsibility.

If the potholes or damaged roads were identified to have caused accidents, the Corporation should be held accountable just as the State Government is holding the engineer and contractor concerned responsible in the Somanur bus stand collapse incident.

And damaged roads were quite likely to cause accidents as road users veered to the right side to avoid pot holes or damaged stretches. Corporation engineers said that the Commissioner has asked them to identify damaged stretches so that the civic body could fill them at once and later complete the patch work. They added that the work was on.
