Rain lashed Siruvani Reservoir and its catchment areas after the Southwest Monsoon appeared to play truant in the past few days.
According to Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, S. Sampath Kumar, the reading on Wednesday 8 a.m. revealed that the reservoir had received 67 mm rain in the preceding 24 hours resulting in the water level in the reservoir increase by 30 cm.
This had enabled the board to improve the water supply to the Coimbatore Corporation from around 45 million litres a day (MLD) to over 65 MLD on Wednesday.
An increase of 30 cm meant that the water would be enough for three days as every 10 cm increase equals a day’s supply.
ReliefThe rain has provided the much-needed relief to the board and Corporation officials, who until a few days ago were worried that with the water available they would be able to meet only 10 days’ supply.
The officials said that if the rain continued in the current fashion, they could take care of Siruvani water supply for the next few months.
