From deploying lorries to flush rainwater from inundated areas to removing trees or branches, the Coimbatore Corporation continued to work in full swing in the last 24 hours as rain continued in the city.

According to Deputy Commissioner P. Gandhimathi, all officials led by the respective Zonal Assistant Commissioners were on standby to attend to emergencies since Saturday evening. The Corporation received two calls regarding tree fall – a big branch of a fully grown tree broke and had fallen on Race Course Road, which the Central Zone officials removed within hours of the call, the second tree fall was in Roopa Nagar in Ward 74, where again, the officials removed the tree.

Ms. Gandhimathi said the civic body had also stationed two lorries each in the fives zones to flush water from inundation-prone areas and they were at work throughout the night. Plus, the motors at subways and underpasses were also at work. This ensured that the inconvenience caused to road users on Sunday morning was minimal.

As of Sunday, the Corporation had received calls of flooding from residents on the banks of Muthannan Kulam. Officials led by the West Zone Assistant Commissioner rushed to the spot and requested the Public Works Department officials to open the shutters to divert the water to the Selvachinthamani Tank. Commissioner S. Ganesh inspected the place on Sunday evening. There was no threat of flooding in the area, Mayor P. Rajkumar said.

The Corporation officials in East Zone also had a tough time on Saturday night as there was the threat of Singanallur – Weavers’ Colony Road getting cut off because of inundation at the Anna Nagar underpass.

Sources said that the officials deployed lorries to flush out water, which worked from 11 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday.

In Singanallur Bus Stand too, the officials flushed out water and removed clogs in drain to remove the water that had stagnated knee-high.

Ms. Gandhimathi said that the Corporation had posted its health staff in vulnerable points such as Kavundampalayam to keep an eye on rain-related issues.

The incessant rain also saw good flow in River Noyyal. Public Works Department officials said that the flow was around 150 cusecs near the Chithirai Chavadi Anaicut and around 100 cusecs near the Big Tank. The Noyyal water was filling all the tanks, including the Sulur Tank.

As of 8 a.m. Sunday, the rain gauge at the Peelamedu Airport had recorded the maximum rainfall in the district - 59.60 mm. The other areas that saw high rainfall were Tamil Nadu Agricultural University - 46 mm, Sulur - 29 mm, Coimbatore South - 28.80 mm, Periyanaickenpalayam - 28 mm and Annur - 27 mm. There was no rain in Pollachi in the 24 hours that ended Sunday morning.
