Unexpected heavy rain which has been lashing some parts of The Nilgiris like Coonoor, Kotagiri and their surroundings for the past few days, has brought cheer to the residents, particularly members of the farming community. It has helped improve the drinking water position in those areas.

Welcoming the wet spell and expressing the hope that the North East monsoon will not play truant, some of the Coonoor residents pointed out to The Hindu that for the past about two years, inadequate rain and consequent water scarcity had subjected all sections of the society in the hill station to considerable hardship.

Thanks to the current wet spell, a number of small and large cascades have been generated along the ghat roads, especially the one connecting Coonoor with Mettupalayam.

During the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Coonoor recorded 64 mm of rainfall, Burliar 60, Kotagiri 77, Kodanad 46,Gudalur Bazaar 35, Devala 32, Ketti 30 and Geddhai 21.

The flow in the Law’s Falls below Coonoor is now heavier than usual for this part of the year. Though the water is muddy, the cascades have become major attractions for the tourists.

In Coimbatore, Mayor P. Rajkumar on Tuesday visited Lanka Corner after it was inundated following showers. Commissioner S. Ganesh accompanied him.

Corporation sources said the Mayor instructed officials to flush out the water at the earliest so as make it easy for road users. He also asked officials to be ready to deal with contingencies during the monsoon.
