Rain continued in the hill areas of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris, disappointing those in the plains. The rainfall had helped in considerable improvement in storage of various reservoirs.
In the last 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. Friday, Coimbatore recorded a total rainfall of 111.70 mm and average rainfall of 9.31 mm while in the Nilgiris, total rainfall was 141 mm and average rainfall stood at 8.29.
Rain had helped in improving the storage in some of the reservoirs under the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project. There was a considerable benefit for Sholayar which had already surplussed and there was a marginal benefit for Aliyar and Amaravathy reservoirs as the storage had either crossed the half-way mark or near the half-way mark. Reservoirs that are yet to witness improvement in storage included Parambikulam and Thirumurthy.
As far as reservoirs that cater to drinking water requirement are considered, water level in Siruvani (serving Coimbatore city and a number of wayside habitations) was 872.20 ft as against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 878.50 ft (mean sea level). Siruvani witnessed a rainfall of 14 mm and the foothills saw a rainfall of 9 mm. The other drinking water service source Pilloor had already surplussed.
