Rain continues in Coimbatore catchments

There was moderate rainfall in Coimbatore and The Nilgiris during the last 24 hours that ended at 8.30 am on Thursday.

Western Ghats in general and Valparai and The Nilgiris in particular had been experiencing heavy rain during the last few days.

Coimbatore

In Coimbatore district, the total rainfall in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am of Thursday was 246.30 and the average rainfall stood at 20.52.

The Nilgiris witnessed a total rainfall of 234.70 and average rainfall stood at 13.81. In Coimbatore, the highest of 60mm was reported from Chinnakallar near Valparai and the lowest of 0.10mm came from Airport Peelamedu.

Since the beginning of the South West monsoon, rain has been heavy in Western Ghats, especially in the catchments. It was near normal in the plains.

Rainfall at other places in Coimbatore in mm at 8.30 am on Thursday is as follows: Pollachi 33, TNAU 0.20, Chincona 50, Valparai PAP 55, Valparai taluk office 39, Sholayar 50, Parambikulam 36, Aliyar 3.4, Upper Nirar 60, Lower Nirar 56, Upper Aliyar 6 and Kadamparai 6.

However, the rain had helped in improving the storage substantially in the Parambikulam Aliyar Project reservoirs.

Storage in ft in PAP reservoirs and the full reservoir level in brackets, according to official sources:

Sholayar 154.39 (160), Parambikulam 11.80 (72), Aliyar dam 69.90 (120), Thirumurthi dam 04.33 (60) and Amaravathi dam 48.97 (90).

Rainfall recorded in various places in The Nilgiris in mm till 8.30 am of Thursday is as follows, according to official sources:

Coonoor 0.20, G Bazaar 32, K. Bridge 1, Ketti 3, Kotagiri 2, Naduvattam 32.50, Udhagamandalam 3, Kallatty 3, Glenmorgan 22, Upper Bhavani 54, Emerald 7, Avalanche 33, Geddai 1 and Devala 40.
