The downpour that lashed the city and its suburbs on Thursday night brought the much required respite from the summer heat. Thursday night’s rain has come after the previous downpour on April 17.

The showers accompanied by lightning and thunder resulted in a lamp post going up in flames on the Valankulam bypass road flyover and uprooting of a tree in Selvapuram.

Roads remained inundated for a few hours and rain kept the Tangedco personnel on their toes in attending to break down calls.

Rainfall level

Coimbatore District in the last 24-hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Friday recorded a total rainfall of 94.10 mm and an average rainfall of 7.84 mm.

Coimbatore South recorded 26.50 mm, followed by Mettuppalayam 12.10, Airport Peelamedu 11.60, Periyanaickenpalayam 10, Sulur 10.20, TNAU 7, Valparai 4.70 mm.

Catchments

Similarly, good rainfall was reported in the catchments of Pilloor, Siruvani and in the water spread and catchment areas of reservoirs coming under the Parambikulam – Aliyar Project (PAP). Aliyar recorded a rainfall of 13 mm followed by 12 mm in Thoonakadavu, while Perurvaripallam recorded 17, Thirumurthy dam recorded 12 mm. Upper Aliyar and Kadamparai recorded 7 mm each.
