The city police on Thursday detained and removed seven persons who staged a protest near Anna statue on Avinashi Road seeking removal of wooden structures erected on the sides of road for MGR centenary celebrations. They were later released on bail.

The protesters gathered in front of a wooden structure erected near the junction, demanding authorities remove the same. The Race Course police reached the spot and held talks with the protesters. Meanwhile, banners erected at several places were found torn.

The police have increased surveillance at public places in the city where chances are likely for protesters to gather.
