Considering the immense benefits reaped by every individual from nature and resources provided for survival, every individual is duty bound to conserve and protect ecology and nature, said Field Director of Anaimalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), H. Basuvaraju on Saturday.

He was speaking at awareness generation programme organised in connection with World Bio-Diversity Day observance organised by the Forest Department in association with Shri Krishna Vithyalayam Matric Higher Secondary School in Divansapudur, Pollachi.

Mr.Basuvaraj said that conservation of ecology and bio-diversity is a must for the benefit of human race. The ecological conservation alone can ensure rainfall and agricultural productivity for ensuring food security for mankind. Anaimalai Tiger Reserve alone has nine dams and the rains fill these dams and take care of the irrigation needs of several lakhs of acres. Forests are a treasure trove of genes for various species. M.K. Anantha Ganesan, Correspondent of Sri Krishna Vithayalayam Matric Higher Secondary School in his felicitations reiterated the need and the pivotal role that students could play in conserving ecology and protecting the rich bio-diversity.

President of Osai, K. Kalidasan said that World Bio-diversity Day is not for celebration or just observance, it is for self-realisation and make every one realise the importance of ecology and bio-diversity. He said that ATR alone accounted for 16 rare varieties of birds and five varieties monkeys. Earlier, piloted by two elephant calves and led by Field Director, Mr.Basuvaraju, Range Officer, S. Thangaraj Panneerselvam and M.K. Anantha Ganesan, a procession was taken out from the office area of the Top Slip reception till Bison Accommodation, wherein the students from Sri Krishna Vithyalayam Matric Higher Secondary Schools raised slogans on conservation of ecology and the need for growing trees. Later the students were addressed and the speakers reiterated the need for sensitising the future generation. The programme was attended by Department, nature enthusiasts and tourists.
