The Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) is considering a proposal to upload the in-patient data of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on to a Health Department portal. This will make CMCH the first Government hospital in the State to implement this as till now, only the data of outpatients was being uploaded.

The CMCH Dean S. Revwathy on Wednesday held discussions with a senior TNHSP official, who reviewed the implementation of the Information Technology project at CMCH.

Hospital sources told The Hindu that the data was being uploaded on to the Health Management Information System (HMIS) portal to generate real-time critical information that could alert the Health Department to any outbreaks of epidemics. The Hospital Management System, which was the predecessor of HMIS, was first implemented in 2004 at CMCH, which was a pioneer in the use of digital X-rays in patient treatment.

The hospital had been allotted 250 new computers under this Information Technology project to computerise patient records. The infrastructure works for the HMIS began in August for computerisation of patient records, sources added.

Under this, the entire process of treating a patient, right from issue of out-patient slips, prescriptions issue and follow-up treatment would be computerised and is to become operational at CMCH by December 25.

Sources said that the umbrella project was underway in all the 20 Government Hospitals and 25 allied health institutions that come under the Department of Medical Education.

Besides the hospital officials, Dr. S.K. Thirunavukkarasu, Deputy Director (HMIS), TNHSP, who is here on a two-day visit, also held discussions with the Public Works Department (Medical Wing).

He inspected the civil works that are currently underway along with M. Venkatesh, TNHSP District Coordinator, hospital and other officials.

The CMCH, which was the tertiary referral hospital for the region and treated patients from several Western districts and even from border districts of Kerala, witnessed anywhere near 7,000 out-patients every day, besides 1,200 in-patients.
