A school established a few decades ago by the Rotary Club of Ootacamund at Theetukal, near here, for the benefit of children belonging to the underprivileged sections of the society now wears a new look thanks to the efforts of the Club members.

With the elements and lack of maintenance having taken their toll, the institution Rotary Vivekananda School, which caters to the needs of about 200 children studying in classes I to V had presented a run down appearance.

Taking into consideration the hostile weather and the plight of the children, the members launched ‘Project Renovation' some time ago and managed to mobilise Rs. 12 lakh.

With it they put up concrete structures totally extending over about 1600 square feet to house four classrooms.

After a puja was performed on Friday, the renovated building was formally handed over by the Project Chairman Chikkuraj to the Correspondent of the school, Ramasubramaniam.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Ramasubramaniam said that the school was one of the earliest projects of the Club and the members attached considerable significance to it. Many of the children who passed through its portals were doing well in life. With improved infrastructure it was expected that their performance would be enhanced.

The Club President, N. Suresh, said that the response to the proposal to give the school a facelift was overwhelming. He added that it reflected the interest of the donors in espousing the cause of education.
