City Police are planning to write to their counterparts in Kashmir, Nagaland and Bihar to ascertain claim by a firm that they had taken licence from the respective State police establishments for the 12 rifles that were seized by the city police on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, police raided the office of a Mumbai based private firm in Masakalipalayam area following information that it was in possession of rifles without licence. On examination, the firm providing security services to seven banks in Coimbatore had 40 rifles for use by their security guards. Of the 40, 12 were found to be without licence. The firm said that the rifles belonged to their employees i.e., security guards and that they had taken licence for the firearms in their names from the respective home States.
Attempt to murder
City Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against seven persons, including a 15-year-old boy.
According to police, the seven were charged with attempting to murder a 16-year-old person who happened to be the relative of the man actually targeted by the gang on Ambedkar Street, Ganapathy on Monday.
According to police, Kishore, 22, a resident of the area, had got into an argument with Kaliappan, from Moore Market in Ganapathy.
On hearing about this, Aravind Kumar, son of Kaliappan, along with six others went to Kishore’s house. The six were identified as Mani (22), Balakrishnan (22) of Sivasakthi Colony in Ganapathy, Pradap (21), Anand (20), and Karthik (22), and a 15-year-old boy, all from the same area.
On not finding Kishore there, the gang asked the 16-year-old boy regarding the whereabouts of his uncle Kishore. When the boy pleaded ignorance, the gang reportedly attacked the boy with a knife causing serious injuries on his face and neck.
Following a complaint, Aravind Kumar and five others were arrested, while one of them is said to be absconding. The victim is said to be critically injured but his condition is stable and improving, police said.
Shop burgledUnidentified persons broke open the mobile phone accessories shop in Gandhipuram and made away with goods worth several lakh rupees from the shop.
According to police, Navneeth Jain (36), is having a shop on 7 street. On Wednesday morning, when he came to open the shop, he found the front lock of the shop broke open. Upon checking the shop, he found mobile phone accessories and telecom spares burgled. Kattoor police registered a case and lifted finger prints from the shop.
Held for code violationA 49-year-old AIADMK man, who was campaigning on the bicycle, was picked up for poll code violation.
According to Race Course police, Vadivel (49), an AIADMK party man from Tiruchengode in Namakkal district, had started his campaign in Chennai on September 15, 2013 in a bicycle for the party’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
He reached Coimbatore on Wednesday morning.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad party members alleging that it is a poll violation caught him and handed over to Race Course police.
The police are discussing with Election Commission officials about the action to be taken against Vadivel for poll violation.
