A teacher of a private school, here, reportedly caned a pre-kindergarten student on the premises of the school in Thudiyalur on Thursday. The Thudiyalur Police are yet to register a case in this connection.

Parents of the three-year-old boy, Niruban Kailash, along with parents of other students staged a protest in front of the school in N.G.G.O. Colony on Friday morning alleging that teacher Prasanna Jayakumar, 37, caned the boy. Sources said that the boy had injury marks on legs, hands and abdomen.

The parents after seeing the marks on Kailash took him to a hospital and after treatment lodged a complaint with the police.

The sources said that when the police summoned Prasanna Jayakumar for an inquiry, she did not turn up and that angered the parents and others and forced them to resort to a protest in front of the school.

The police rushed to the spot, pacified the parents and promised action. Thereafter the parents gave up the protest.

Thudiyalur Inspector Kanagasundaram said that based on parents’ complaint, the police had issued an acknowledgement receipt and had written to the Judicial Magistrate concerned to register a case as it was not a cognisable offence.

Once the Magistrate gives his opinion, the police would go ahead and do the needful.
