Prabhu promises mass transit project for Coimbatore

Party nominees, others file nominations

Congress nominee R. Prabhu and two others filed their nominations before officials concerned at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Wednesday.

Mr. Prabhu, a former MP from the Nilgiris constituency, declared his moveable assets at Rs. 7.57 crore and immoveable assets at Rs. 32.96 crore. He put his wife Anita Prabhu’s moveable assets at Rs. 11.29 crore and immoveable assets at Rs. 9.11 crore.

There was no case pending against him; nor had he been convicted for offences where the punishment was over two years imprisonment, he had declared. His highest educational qualification was Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

Speaking to journalists at the Collectorate, he said that if elected, he would strive to bring about a mass transit project for the city and take up issues that concerned the people here. He was ready to even talk to the Chief Minister in this regard.

The Returning Officer and Collector Archana Patnaik said that Mr. Prabhu would come back to complete his affidavit as a few entries were missing.

M. Rajagopal, 62, of Makkal Desiya Katchi, who was fighting as an independent, declared that his moveable assets was Rs. 3.15 lakh, his wife P.R. Amutham’s was Rs. 21.58 lakh and son P.R. Sanjay Gandhi’s was Rs. 23,567. He put his immovable assets at Rs. 10.08 lakh, his wife’s at Rs. 5.24 lakh and son’s at Rs. 92,000.

A. Duraisamy, an independent, also filed his nomination papers.

For the Pollachi Parliamentary constituency, Pon. Karthikeyan filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate. In Tirupur , the candidates of Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Communist Party of India filed their nomination papers with the Returning Officer G. Govindaraj, here on Wednesday.

E.V.K.S. Elangovan, the Congress candidate, and K. Subbarayan, the CPI candidate, both former MPs, filed four sets of nomination papers each, while the AAP candidate, R. Chakravarthi Rajagopala Krishnan, a retired police official, filed two sets of nomination papers.

The affidavit filed by Mr. Elangovan before the Returning Officer stated that he had moveable properties worth Rs 28,43,899, which include Rs 13.75 lakh cash in hand, and immovable properties worth Rs. 13.25 crore. The wife of Mr. Elangovan had moveable properties worth Rs. 33 lakh.

The liabilities of Mr. Elangovan in the form of loan stood at Rs 1.7 crore while that of his spouse was Rs 18 lakh as loan.

Mr. Subbarayan had moveable property of just Rs. 2,463.15 whereas his wife holds moveable properties worth Rs. 4.51 lakh and immovable properties worth Rs 78 lakh.
