Postal savings scheme for girl child

Department of Posts has launched a new savings scheme (Sukanya Samriddhi Account) for girl child. The department has opened 50 accounts in Coimbatore already and plans to open about 13,500 accounts in Coimbatore division under the scheme by the end of March.

The minimum amount for opening an account is Rs. 1,000 and the maximum amount that can be deposited in a financial year is Rs. 1.5 lakh.

The interest rate for the financial year 2014-2015 will be 9.1 per cent and the tenure will be 21 years.

It can be opened by parents or guardian of a girl child who was born on or after December 2, 2003.
