Pookalam contest heralds Onam

Creative ideas took the form of colourful ‘pookalams’ (flower carpets) at the Onam celebration organised by Brookefields Mall on Thursday. Onam falls on August 29 and the competition sought to set the tempo for the celebrations. This is the second successive year that the shopping mall organised the competition in the city that has a substantial Malayali population.

Around 65 people in 20 teams participated in the competition.

Images depicting landscape and culture of Kerala including Kathakali, coconut trees and Mahabali were part of the designs. The winners were awarded gifts worth Rs. 20,000.

Joint Secretray of Chitrakala Academy Chandrasekar and the director of Investwell Group of Companies were the judges.

The winners are first: Prasenna Ravikumar, Indhu Pradeep, Lesitha Sasikumar and Vijaya Premkumar; second: Bindhu, Suma, Prabha and Megha; and third: Urmila Surana, Mansi and Anitha Kalavathi.
