With promises of reviving the Noyyal river and brining in sustainable development, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Pon Chandran on Thursday filed his nomination for the Coimbatore Parliamentary Constituency.
After handing over the affidavits to Returning Officer and District Collector Archana Patnaik, the AAP nominee told reporters that party heavy weights including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav have been requested to campaign in the city.
A 60-year-old retired official from the State Bank of Travancore, he is currently residing at Ganapathy. As per his returns, his annual income was Rs. 1,88,188 during 2012-13 financial year.
Mr. Chandran, who completed a degree in M.Sc. (Psychology) from Bharathiyar University here in December 2007, declared total movable assets of Rs.15.06 lakh and immovable assets valued at Rs.37.76 lakh in his name. Further, his wife K. Thanalakshmi had assets to the tune of Rs. 9.29 lakh and son Akhil, Rs. 65,900.
A case under the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Destruction and Loss) Act is pending against him at the Sulur Police Station on May 2009. No charges have been filed.
He said that lack of sustainable development had led to depletion of ground water levels in the district. Combined with the power crisis, Coimbatore’s vital sectors of agriculture and small enterprises have been hit hard, he said.He also urged the people to not sell their votes for money as doing so would mean they had thrown away their right to hold to account their elected representatives.
Several independents also filed nominations on Thursday. They include Alphonse Raj, Mohan Raj, Nagaraj, Thandapani and Thiyagarajan for Coimbatore Parliamentary Constituency and Satish Kumar, Kathiravanand Ramasamy for Pollachi.
Staff reporter from Tirupur adds: Two candidates, an Independent and a representative of Lok Satta Party, filed their nomination papers to G. Govindaraj, the Returning Officer and the Collector, on Thursday.
The Lok Satta Party's candidate, R. Gopalsamy (38), an insurance and investment consultant, is a native of Palladam. Hismoveable assets were worth Rs. 8.51 lakh and had no immovable properties in his name.
M. Palanisamy (60), contesting as an Independent candidate, was the other person to file the nomination papers on the day.The CPI sources said that M. Subramanian, the party's district secretary, would be filing the nominations as the substitute candidate for K. Subbarayan, on April 5.

He had movable assets worth rupees 19,00,000 and immovable assets worth rupees 60,00,000.The movable assets with his wife G.Mirthula were worth rupees 3,50,000.
