Pollachi Railway Junction on track to cross rare milestone

October 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The Palakkad – Pollachi Railway line will turn a new chapter in its history when regular train services start on the newly converted broad gauge link. The Pollachi Junction turns 100 years on October 15.

The station was opened when train services began on the Podanur - Pollachi section on October 15, 1915.

The station and the metre gauge railway system that served the link for over seventy five years in between Pollachi and Palakkad, made a significant impact on the socio-economic life of the people in the region.

When the Podanur to Pollachi link was subsequently extended to Dindigul on November 19, 1928, its importance increased. When yet another line was laid connecting Palakkad and Pollachi in April 1, 1932, the section gained more prominence. From the date of its commissioning on April 1, 1932 to its closure on December 10, 2008, the line served travel, trade and pilgrimage needs of the people extensively.

The Dindigul – Pollachi – Kinathukkadavu - Podanur section was closed for gauge conversion on May 14, 2009. In connection with the centenary of Pollachi Junction and completion of gauge conversion of the line to Palakkad, Palakkad Railway Division plans to record the nostalgic moments and memories of the good old days of metre gauge era - uniquely designed station buildings, lush greenery surrounding the Junction, picturesque landscape, huffing and puffing of majestic steam locos, the charm of the simple metre gauge coaches and the characteristic mechanical signalling system.

Stations in the meter gauge section were a much sought-after location for a number of South Indian movies, especially Tamil and Malayalam.

Even Bollywood remakes of several super-hit Tamil movies preferred this location. Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has, therefore, sought data of texts, photographs, and video or film clippings with a direct link to the Railway system of Pollachi station or Palakkad - Pollachi Railway line. The Division will display the name of the person/organisation which provides the data.

Any first-hand factual narration having a direct involvement in trains running in this section, travelogues, relevant themes, etc., will also be accepted, of course, subject to their authenticity, Palakkad Division sources said. The Public Relations Officer of Palakkad Railway Division can be reached on mobile number 97467-63002 and the email id is propgt14@gmail.com.
