The City Police Commissioner, P. Sivanandi, on Friday launched a scheme for mobilising nearly one lakh books for equipping the libraries of 100 Government, Corporation and private schools identified in the City.
The objective is to provide opportunities for underprivileged children to learn and get educated beyond the academic curriculum.
An educated society could be free from mushrooming criminal activities.
Literacy and education would eradicate unemployment and poverty and the scope for people to turn into criminals would get reduced.
Police officials have been asked to look forward for sponsors and philanthropists who could donate books.
The books mobilised by personnel and officers were handed over to the City Police Commissioner, P. Sivanandi in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police, N. Kamini (Crime and Traffic).
The Commissioner said that people willing to contribute for this gesture could buy books and donate them and those who have books to be spared for this noble cause could approach the nearest police station and hand over the same.
The Director of UNESCO, Arumugam Parasuraman, who is visiting Coimbatore on December 27, would launch this initiative.
