The police have imposed a fine on the driver of a private bus that plies between Coimbatore and Tirupur for jumping a signal and speeding on Avinashi Road.

Action was taken on the bus driver after the incident was taken to the notice of a senior police officer in the city in a whatsapp group on Monday.

The police officer was a member of the whatsapp group of the city and little did the person who shared it know that a senior traffic police officer was a member of the group.

The person posted the image of the bus skipping signal at Nava India Junction and pointed out that the driver also used an air horn and that the violator had no regard for other road users.

While the informer had only asked other members of the group to avoid that bus for the violation, the police officer forwarded it to his subordinates who traced the bus the same day.

The Peelamedu traffic police booked the driver of the bus for using air horn and for signal jumping and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,100 on him.

The officer then shared copies of the case registered against the driver and the receipt on the group, to the surprise of other members. Prompt action taken by the police based on a whatsapp message won the appreciation of the members of the group.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R. Sivakumar said that public could help the police take action against persons indulging in speeding and other violations on the road by bringing them to the notice of the police by sending a message on whatsapp to the helpline number of the city police at ‘8190000100’.

“The informer should send a picture or video that supports the allegation to help the enforcing officer use it as proof and initiate action against the violators. The police personnel taking note of the complaint will also get back to the complainant on the action taken on their complaint,” he added.
