Tense moments prevailed when irate residents of Pappanaickenpudur and Seeranaickenpalayam staged a road blockade on the Marudhamalai Road on Tuesday demanding the immediate arrest of accused in the alleged murder of a teenager who is reported missing since January 1. They also demanded that the body be handed over to the parents at the earliest.
According to police, S. Sakthivel (41) had preferred a complaint with the R.S. Puram police stating that his son Sathishkumar (19) had gone missing. Preliminary investigations revealed that Sathishkumar and his friends got into a fight with a group from the neighbouring residential colony on December 31 while cutting the cake to herald the New Year. The fight ended in an exchange of blows. However, the elders and the police intervened and resolved the problem.
On January 1 evening, Sathishkumar (19) who went out on a motorcycle never returned home till January 2. On the basis of the information about the clash on December 31 midnight, the police intensified the search for the youth and the police zeroed in on those in the rival group. Police suspected settling of scores by the opposite gang thus leading to the fear of a murder. Preliminary inquiries indicated that the rival gang had intercepted the victim and murdered him forcing cyanide down his throat. Police suspect that the gang buried the body at PN Pudur burial ground. Five persons have been picked up for questioning. Pacifying the agitated residents on road blockade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters and Law and Order) E.S. Uma along with Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Kumarasami said that the investigations were on the right lines and there are vital clues about the accused. Ms.Uma said that the police are just complying with the legal procedures to apprehend the real culprits and to ensure legal and logical conclusion of the case.
If the apprehensions were found to be true based on the outcome of the interrogation, the Revenue authorities would be requested to exhume the body on Wednesday.
