In two different incidents, the Coimbatore Rural Police seized 1,365 litres of rectified spirit from a maxi cab van in Pollachi and unearthed a spurious Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) manufacturing unit near Madukkarai on the outskirts of the city.
Following information, the police examined a vehicle parked near the bus stand and found 39 cans each containing 35 litres of rectified spirit.
The van is suspected to be on its way to Kerala and the seizure was made when the driver waited for his reliever. The driver is suspected to have fled on seeing the police.
Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, N. Kannan has constituted special teams to trace the driver, consignor and consignee.
In another incident, the police have unearthed a spurious liquor manufacturing unit near Madukkarai.
Following a tip-off and reports based on Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) off-take, the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) was asked to step up intelligence gathering on manufacture and marketing of spurious liquor in the fringe areas of the city and rural areas.
The Perur PEW officials raided a house at Auto Nagar near Bypass road in Madukkarai and found a spurious liquor manufacturing unit.
Arrest
The police found 1,632 bottles of spurious liquor each measuring 180 ml and excise seals and chemicals used for manufacturing liquor.
Two persons from Kerala, Ramadas (40), Seemansaras (32), and one from Pudukottai, Saravanan (30) were arrested.
Mr. Kannan inspected the manufacturing unit. He has constituted special teams for arresting two more accused wanted in connection with this case. Mr. Kannan has also warned of invoking Goondas Act and Bootleggars Act against those habitually involving themselves in Prohibition related offences.
