The City Police on Friday removed 57 activists of All India Democratic Women's Association when they attempted to stage an agitation in front of Central Bus Stand at Gandhipuram.

Benefits

They were protesting against the Central Government's proposed move regarding norms for obtaining benefits under Below Poverty Line category.

The members who had gathered at the spot raised slogans charging that the government had failed to take effective measures in order to control the price rise.

Wastage

They wanted the government to take measures that would stop the wastage of foodgrains that were stored in godowns.

In addition to this, the members also wanted the government to remove the salary ceiling for qualifying as a family under the below poverty line category.

Our Tirupur Staff Reporter adds:

As many as 120 members of All India Democratic Women's Association were arrested here on Friday when they tried to hold a road block agitation to press their demands.

G. Savithri, state deputy secretary and Tirupur district secretary of AIDWA, said that the present enumeration of the below poverty line (BPL) category that had been undertaken by the Central Government was found to be excluding more people from the list than including in it.

The methodology need to be reviewed as many poor people were finding themselves excluded from BPL category on the grounds of some trivial economic criteria being adopted for evaluation, she added.

The AIDWA members were also critical of the proposed move to substitute subsidies with cash disbursement in LPG, kerosene and fertilizer distribution.

The decision to carry out the agitation on the day was taken at the 13th AIDWA state conference held in Tirupur recently.
