Having made all-out efforts to sensitise the merchant community and bankers to have surveillance cameras to prevent thefts and to get clues in the event of commission of an offence, Coimbatore City Police are now embarking on a mission to install cameras in core business areas to have the advantage of the vigil of an electronic eye.
The decision comes in the wake of series of thefts. City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan has asked for a detailed study on having surveillance cameras installed in pockets prone to incidents of crime. Deputy Commissioners of Police Pravesh Kumar (Traffic) and K. Sugumar (Crime) have been entrusted with the task of carrying out the study to identify the locations, feasibility, efficiency levels and cost factor in terms of core business hubs in two police station limits as a pilot project. The two police station limits are B 1 – Big Bazaar and B 8 – Variety Hall Road.
A team would visit the areas and identify streets that required electronic eye and the locations that would be ideal for installing them.
