Police keep activists at bay

February 15, 2012 12:13 pm | Updated 12:13 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

Deployment of police personnel in adequate numbers and presence of personnel in plain clothes ensured that the Valentine's Day passed off peacefully in the city without any incidents of moral policing by activists who are opposed to the western culture of celebrating the day.

Police pickets were posted at VOC Park, Zoo, Race Course, Botanical Garden, shopping complexes, restaurants and cinemas frequented by youth. The VOC Park remained closed in the morning to the disappointment of couples. It was opened only at 4 p.m. While the Corporation Zoo was closed on account of Tuesday being normal holiday for maintenance works.

A group of activists of Aruntamizhar Peravai who came to VOC Park to distribute sweets to couples were removed by the police as a matter of precaution to prevent clashes. They were kept at a marriage hall and were let off in the evening, said T.P. Sundaramoorthy, Commissioner of Police – Coimbatore City.

Earlier during the day, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam cadre had a cake cutting ceremony in honour of those who entered into inter-caste marriages. In the evening 12 anniversary of the Inter-caste Couples' Welfare Association was held at the handloom expo grounds on Dr. Nanjappa Road.
