Coimbatore City Police along with the Corporation officials on Friday foiled an attempt to build a temple on a Corporation reserve site at Kuniamuthur.
After a few persons claimed that a soothsayer had declared that a Sivalingam was buried on a plot in ‘N’ block at Kuniamuthur and that a temple should be built, a group of people led by Hindu activists went to the spot, dug the Sivalingam and attempt to build a platform.
However, another of group of people opposed the move saying that the place was a Corporation reserve site and that no platform or temple should be built.
The Kuniamuthur Police rushed to the spot and asked the activists to give up the move to build any structure there. This led to an argument between the police and the activists.
The Police then informed the Corporation officials, who rushed to the spot and removed whatever was built there. The Police took away the Sivalingam and registered cases against those who created trouble and those who encouraged it.
The Police said that they had charged Hanuman Sena’s Sakthivel and a few others with unlawful assembly, trespass, prevent public servants from discharging their duty under provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act among others. The Police also registered one more case against those who failed to disburse from the venue and continued to support the Hindu activists’ activities.
The Police said that they had arrested more than 30 persons and were on the lookout for Sakthivel and a few more.
