City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu on Saturday flagged off four new patrol vehicles with state-of-the-art gadgets connected to the modern police control room.
Mr. Sylendra Babu told The Hindu, the patrol vehicles will be deployed on the basis of one vehicle each in Coimbatore East, West, South and Central sub-divisions. This will be in addition to the 24 patrol jeeps attached to 15 police stations besides the 60-odd two-wheeler patrol vehicles.
Global positioning
The patrol vehicles are fitted with global positioning system (GPS) connected to the police control room.
The location of the vehicle and its proximity to a place of requirement could be assessed from the control room and accordingly the nearest vehicle could be diverted.
The vehicle is fitted with wireless sets, high-tech revolving lights with siren to wade through traffic, public address system besides a speed dome camera.
The images captured by the camera could be viewed from the control room.
Mr. Babu also said that works for an Integrated Aerial Surveillance Traffic Management System for the city is under way at a cost of Rs. 1.63 crore and this would have control over 120 traffic prone pockets in Coimbatore City.
This system would virtually bring the entire traffic flow under the scanner.
Based on the images captured by the cameras installed in traffic signals the modern control room could have a bird's-eye view of the traffic situation across the city and take decisions on traffic flow management and diversion. The system that was put to use during the recently concluded World Classical Tamil Conference is becoming a permanent reality for the entire city.
