Coimbatore City Police will take strict legal action against members of outfits if they attempt to indulge in moral policing on Valentine’s Day on Thursday (February 14).
Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravesh Kumar told The Hindu that already places where lovers and couples gather have been identified and police personnel in uniform as well as in plainclothes will be posted in adequate numbers in VOC Park, Corporation Zoo, shopping complexes, malls and cinema theatres.
In the past, there had been attempts by outfits on Valentine’s Day, to intercept couples and force them to tie the mangalsutra, stating that love and lovers moving around was against Indian culture.
They had even staged protests by burning Valentines Day greeting cards stating that the celebrations were ‘Western culture’.
Anybody attempt to intercept lovers or couples, threaten them or force them to tie the mangalsutra will be viewed very seriously, for there is no provision in law for any kind of moral policing.
Many of these places are already under the vigil of electronic eyes.
