Members of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) staged a demonstration in front of the Railway Station at Tirupur on Tuesday for the purpose of asking the Centre to carry out a caste-based census.

PMK state deputy secretary C. Vadivel Gounder said that caste-based population census was essential to allocate proportionate reservation for all communities according to their strength and thereby achieve the goal of social justice in its true sense.

“At the moment, we are not in possession of any authentic data base which projects the exact number of people caste-wise and the last caste-based census was carried out as early as in 1931,” he added.

The agitators further pointed out that owing to lack of correct data, many of the weaker sections were still not getting their deserved quota of reservation.
