Process underway to repair water tank: Corporation
Borewell water supply to residents of Ward 33, 34 and 36 in Kalapatti has been affected for quite sometime. The complaint from the wards in Kalapatti is that at the tail end areas the water pressure is not enough.
The problem that travels upward from the tail end areas ends on Pillaiyar Koil Street in Ward 33, where the water tank leaks. The 15-year-old tank with a capacity of around 30,000 litre cannot hold water to the brim because of the leak, says Ward 33 Councillor J. Mohan Ranganathan.
The reduced storage does not build enough pressure to take the water to the tail end areas – Kattoor Street, Annai Pillaiyar Kovil Street and couple of streets each in Ward 34 and 36.
Ward 36 Councillor P. Raghupathy says that Thilagar Street, Bharathi Street and neighbouring areas do not receive water with the necessary force.
To overcome the problem and to meet the additional demand, the Corporation has sunk couple of borewells in Ward 33. Given the tank and its condition, it will be difficult for the Corporation to supply water, Mr. Ranganathan says.
The then Kalapatti panchayat administration constructed the water tank to meet the residents borewell water needs. The tank gets water from eight borewells and two open wells in the three wards.
The Councillor says that the Corporation must immediately repair the tank and sink additional borewells in the three wards because since the construction of the tank, the population has increased manifold. With the existing infrastructure it is impossible to meet the current day demand.
He has raised the issue in the last Council meeting to draw the attention of the Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy. Corporation sources say that they are in the process of repairing the tank.
